If they do nothing, they don’t care
Just finishing a Russian art history class in the previous quarter, I was absolutely obsessed with the constructionist movement. This time period not only appealed to me as a designer, but as someone who is quite the amateur historian. When in my Advanced Typography class we were asked to pick a period in art history to design a book around, the choice was a simple one.
Myself and the professor teaching this class were not exactly each others biggest fans. Maybe it was a Minneapolis/Chicago rivalry, or maybe she just really wanted me to achieve my best potential. In any case, she absolutely tore my first draft to shreds! I was angry and determined to show her that my book was going to be something great.
With my mother’s voice in my head saying, “If she did nothing, it means she doesn’t care”, I set off to create my masterpiece. I stayed up almost all night, creating everything in Adobe Indesign. Trying to take each artist work and interpreting it as my own on each page.
I carried my magnum opus in the classroom with pride. When it was my turn to present, I knew I was going nail it. And I did! My professor looked at me and smiled, and in that moment I knew she pushed me to be great because she cared. I am still grateful for that.
