VoteApp.io is an application designed to educate voters on political candidates. Unaffiliated with any political party, it would create a safe, neutral, and educational platform to encourage civic engagement.

Goals

Phase 1

Existing research in behavioral psychology and gamification was found to determine how users might interact with VoteApp.io. A competitive audit apps with similar functions, in order to understand common user interface patterns. Overt gamification is tempting, but distracting for users from the app’s central message. Self-reported information from users towards VoteApp.io’s design concepts aided in our research.

Using early feedback from users, a user flow and rough prototypes were created. Feature concepts were tested with 6 participants, exposing them to design ideas via storyboards and value-based questions.

Phase 2

We began by creating mid-fidelity prototypes. This was followed up with information architecture. Usability testing was conducted with 5 participants, walking them through a given scenario. Observing their experiences with the prototype identified pain points and areas of opportunity for further development. The app’s initial artistic direction was also solidified via the clients requests.

Phase 3

With the results of all our research, we were then able to synthesize the overarching themes that we previously mentioned: neutrality, credibility, and privacy. A high fidelity-interactive prototype was created along with scenarios to explain the apps key features and user flows.

Neutrality: Access to nonpartisan, impartial, and unbiased viewpoints of politicians

Credibility: The trustworthiness of data sources and the creator of the app

Privacy: Transparency of the app’s usage of personally identifiable data

Looking Ahead

Next steps are to conduct further research into trust-building with users and the viability and desirability of a filter feature as well as to understand the app’s impact on millennials’ voting experience.
